When building or rebuilding a business web site there are some important factors that are easy to implement in the beginning, but are difficult to change once the web site is built and online. To some degree, building a web site is like building a house. If you start building a two bedroom house then halfway – or even all the way through – you decide you want a four bedroom house with a garage it is easy to see how efficiency, time and money can be blown out the door. Similarly, if you build your house on a flood plain, you may as well just start over. Deciding half way through you want an extra two bedrooms and garage is akin to starting with a simple five page site and then realizing half way through you need a store, a database, email auto-responder and newsletter. Starting small and growing is an excellent plan, but it can get messy if the expansion is not well planned. Building a house in a flood plain could be akin to building an entire site in Flash only to realize the search engines cannot index your site. Sure you will be able to use some of the design elements, but essentially, you will have to rebuild or wait for the flood. Here are some more things that are good to know in regard to how to build a business web site and what you should know before building or rebuilding your business web site.
Budgeting – How Much does a Web Site Cost?
Several Factors go into the creation and maintenance of a web site, as follows:
Domain registration – To keep your .com, you must pay a yearly registration fee. This can range from a few dollars to $35 a year or more. Paying a little more than rock-bottom to get better service is often a good route to go.
Hosting prices– How much is this site going to cost to host? A site must have a host computer that serves out pages to those coming to the site. Price factors include bandwidth and datatransfer, SSL certificates, merchant account fees, base hosting costs, and storage and backup fees. Backup services are essential to sites that collect valuable information such as online orders or survey results.
Design – A simple template web site can run you a few hundred bucks while a full custom Flash site with video and interaction can cost as much as you want it to – easily $20,000. The design of your site may be the only chance you get to make a positive impression on a potential client. It is important to have a professional design the presents your company powerfully and memorably.
Programming – Similarly to design, a simple newsletter or forum script could run in the hundreds or less, while a fully automated lead generation and sales tool web site run into the thousands and more easily. Site programming for basic sites can often be accomplished with pre-made scripts that cut down on cost, while unique and complex sites are generally scripted from the ground up. A hybrid of the two approaches can give you great flexibility in function while keeping costs down.
Marketing – If you build a web site and no one comes to it, there is not much point of having a web site. Marketing your web site should be budgeted from the beginning or you may find yourself building a web site that does nothing for your company.
Domain issues
.com’s are easier to remember than other extensions. Try to get a domain that describes your business. Keywords, or words that people would type to find your site, are useful to have in domain names for search engine optimization as well as memorability. Domains should be registered for at least a few years and always be kept a few years ahead of expiration. It would be terrible to lose your web site due to a domain registration accidentally expiring.
Likewise it is important to make sure your domain registration information is current and up to date. Not only will this allow you to receive reminder notices when the domain is up for renewal, but will also ensure you will always have access to your domain. Make sure to keep your domain registrar, user name and password handy so you can make updates to your domain.
An extremely important tip is don't let your web designer register your domain to him or her self. This is essentially giving him or her title to your web site. If that webmaster disappears, your entire business can find itself in a boat load of trouble trying to get your web site back. If your webmaster has registered your domain, get him or her to transfer it to you as soon as possible. Often a web designer will register a domain for a client meaning well – to save the client time and the possibility of error - but this can lead to trouble down the road.
Marketing
This is another point that cannot be stressed enough. A web site with no visitors is useless. When building a store with brick and mortar, before the first brick is laid, it is important to know exactly how the store will be marketed. Will passersby stop in? Will the business be advertised in newspapers, television, radio, billboards, signs and the internet? It is easy to see why before building a store, these factors must be worked out. Building a store in an obscure place and expecting to generate income from foot traffic is a plan doomed to fail. A web site is just the same. Without a clear and solid plan of how to get visitors to your site, your site is not likely to succeed.
Before the first page is created, it is important to know your target audience, target keywords and how the site will be marketed. Knowing your audience will allow you to have your site designed with them in mind. Knowing your keywords will allow your designer to name the pages, links and images according to your marketing goals. Once you have created pages it can be difficult to change the names without losing search engine rankings for that page.
Building a site without consulting with an experienced web marketer can be a road to disaster. An experienced web designer may be able to make your site look great but know nothing at all about web marketing. Beware of the site that is totally in Flash but not at all indexable by search engines. Also beware of sites that take ages to download, even on high-speed connections. In short, make sure to consult with a web marketer before building your first page.
Conclusion
The more knowledge you can arm yourself with before embarking on a web construction project the better. Having the right tools and information from the beginning can help save you time, money and frustration. Whenever embarking on building or rebuilding a business website, it will pay off many times over to do your research well.
